Job Description:
Position Summary

The Building Science Scientist will identify and develop product and system improvements through recognition of construction & building science trends, with a focus on the commercial and residential construction market. They will provide engineering support and assist with day to day progress of product development projects, systems development projects, and risk mitigation projects. The incumbent will be a team member of a cross-functional team of technologists, engineers, manufacturing and market/business development professionals through the feasibility, development, implementation, and post implementation of a new product life cycle. This position will report to the Building Science Manager and will be an introduction to product development, engineering, fiber cement manufacturing, and R&D. The candidate will be exposed to many units in the business, and will be exposed to career paths in engineering, and project management. This position will work very closely with the technical managers to get their products to the market.

Position Responsibilities

This position will assist in the ongoing progress of building science projects by working with a cross-functional team of technologists, engineers, manufacturing and market/business development professionals.

- Identify trends in building practices, quantify their impact on James Hardie products, and develop strategies to cope with the trends
- Support the continuous improvement of James Hardie’s installation practices, systems development, and product development
- Design, construct, and run experiments to evaluate full-scale systems as well as individual components, analyze and report on observations and data collected
- Evaluate the effectiveness of JH installation practices via field audits, product evaluations, house audits, and destructive inspections
- Generate application and product concepts that support improved product durability, future volume growth, installation efficiency, and future product & platform development
- Develop project management experience, by assisting other project managers, then moving to use these skills to run projects of the candidate’s own.
- Show the ability to understand and apply project goals and participate in the JH innovation/stage gate process to be able to met all milestones.
- Show the ability to build and maintain relationships with external vendors and service providers.
- Communicate individual progress accurately to Technical and Business leaders.

Quantitative Dimensions
Decision Making:
The incumbent will have the authority to make day to day decisions to complete their normal job function. The incumbent will also be responsible to support and drive recommendations for technical aspects of outside projects. Innovative decision making abilities are required to be successful in this individual contributor’s role. As a team member of the R&D organization, an engineer is required to make key decisions in regards to their respective projects that will have both immediate and long-term impact to the business.

Performance:

- The Building Science Scientist’s performance will be deemed successful by assisting the Project Manager to move through the Stage Gate Process effectively. Performance will be assessed through each stage of a project, Feasibility, Development, Implementation, and Post Implementation.
- Problem solving and the ability to understand mechanical and process design and operation will be evaluated continually.

Position Requirements

This position will require mechanical aptitude, design aptitude, strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Experience in project management, leadership is a plus, but will be learned on the job.

Leadership (Project Management):

- Motivation – the ability to influence others to do what needs to be done, even if they are not direct reports as well as the ability to sustain oneself through difficult periods and still deliver results.
- Planning/Organizing skills – the ability to understand priorities, determine the critical path, develop contingency plans
- Communication- the ability to listen, to clearly articulate objectives so that they are understood, and to provide both recognition and critical feedback

Technical Skills (Engineering):
- Building codes such as IRC, IBC, and CCMC plus LEED and similar sustainability programs
- Building design including major systems
- Building practices in the single family and multifamily segments
- Analytic systems such as Excel or Minitab
- Troubleshooting experience
- Simulation tools such as EnergyPlus, WUFI, or similar.
- Computer Aided Design and Analysis training or experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required):
- Computer Aided Design & Analysis (AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and/or SolidWorks).
- Project management experience (PMP certification is a plus but not required)
- Past Experience of working on a cross-functional team.
- Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management and with other aspects of an operating business (e.g. marketing, sales, manufacturing, logistics)
- Experience with Stage/Gate or Phase/Gate development processes is a plus
- Strong technical writing and presentation skills with an attention to detail.
- Ability to interpret construction plans / details and make determinations on suitability for product installation
- Hands – on experience with construction and knowledge of latest practices.
- Able to travel up to 25% of time.

Education/Experience Required:
- B.S. in Engineering ( Mechanical, Civil, Architectural)
- 5 years experience in the building or construction industry
