Position Title Pre-Autoclave Design Engineer
Position Summary
The Pre Autoclave Design Engineer will work on designing new Fiber Cement manufacturing equipment including sheet machine, feed system, effluent system, vacuum system, green sheet conveyors, and green sheet stacker. This position is responsible for all Mechanical and some Electrical equipment components and systems. In order to be effective in this role the person will need to be capable of performing detailed engineering work in both disciplines. This individual should be capable of working independently. Experience in maintenance or operations in an industrial environment is highly desired.
Position Responsibilities
Responsible for the design of pre-autoclave fiber cement manufacturing equipment to include: (90%)
Design Engineering
- Supervise mechanical design and major equipment selection including sheet machine, green sheet conveyors, green sheet stacker, machine feed system, machine effluent system, and related sheet machine support equipment.
- Supervise structural design including building modification, foundations and slabs, access platforms, equipment and crane support structures associated with Pre-Autoclave equipment in collaboration with the construction team.
- Work with Corporate EH&S group to prepare operating permits and OSHA safety requirements;
- Supervise the creation of Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process Flow Diagrams for Pre-Autoclave equipment.
Equipment Purchase
- Develop specifications for the purchase of mechanical equipment and systems including process equipment, material handling equipment, complex machinery, fluid systems (hydraulic, pneumatic, and high pressure water), material conveyance systems, dust collection systems, storage silos, tanks, pumps, and valves; support the construction team in the procurement of specialized equipment as required.
- Recommend electrical power distribution equipment including transformers, switchgear, disconnects, and motor control centers based on equipment design.
- Lead equipment design review meetings between vendors, construction team, R&D, and manufacturing personnel.
- Coordinate design decisions between vendors
Construction and Startup
- Prepare Request for Quotes (RFQs) for Pre-Autoclave fiber cement manufacturing equipment.
- Work with construction team to procure bids and award contracts;
- Assist construction team as Subject Matter Expert (SME) during mechanical system checkout, equipment startup, and turnover to plant for Pre- Autoclave fiber cement manufacturing equipment.
- Ensure Project Close Out Documentation is archived and made available to the plant manufacturing team; to include as-built drawings, OEM operation manuals, OEM maintenance manuals, and functional descriptions at a minimum.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
- This is a very “Hands On” position. To be considered, the candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks on his / her own including the ability to supervise other engineers, consultants, or vendors performing the same tasks.
Responsible for the development of Capital Project Requests to include: (10%)
- Scale up of process design as required for production (i.e. size tanks and pumps, determine flow rates, throughputs, etc.);
- Evaluate utility requirements and determine availability;
- Supervise preparation of equipment arrangement and P&ID drawings;
- Prepare mechanical equipment lists;
- Solicit quotations for equipment or estimate pricing using recent purchases;
- Develop installation scope of work for mechanical equipment and systems, buildings, foundations, platforms and structures;
- Solicit quotations for installation or estimate costs using sound engineering judgment;
- Review proposed design with plant operations, maintenance, and safety;
- Prepare overall project estimate, implementation schedule, and Capital Expenditure Request for management review.

He or She should also poses the skills required to analyze and evaluate existing mechanical systems and recommend improvements which will enhance overall plant equipment reliability and efficiency
Position Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Required:
- Knowledge of Mechanical Building Codes, specific emphasis on how they affect equipment design.
- Knowledge of Equipment and Machine Design Standards and Specifications including AWS, ANSI, and ASTM (preferred).
- Knowledge of National Electric Code (NEC).
- Knowledge of applicable OSHA standards for industrial equipment (preferred).
- Knowledge of database systems for process control applications (preferred).
- Basic familiarity with the installation and programming of Allen Bradley or Siemens PLC systems, and Wonderware HMI software.
- Demonstrated skills with the standard features of various personal computers including word processing and spreadsheets (Microsoft Word and Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet Explorer)
- Advanced familiarity with and ability to work in Autocad drawing software including the ability to view and print drawings and make changes in. Advanced drawing skills are preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills with the ability to relate well and cooperate with others to effectively coordinate activities and accomplish goals.
- Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail and continual diligence about follow-up.
- Strong desire to learn and teach other is a must.
- Well organized, with the ability to multi-task.

- 7+ years’ experience in an industrial manufacturing environment (sheeted process systems such as paper, steel, gypsum is preferred).
- Experience designing complex machinery, mechanical equipment, or processes
- Experience designing utility and process piping systems including tanks, pumps, valves, fittings and in line components, and pipe support systems;
- Experience designing mechanical systems including Hydraulics, Pneumatics, High Pressure Water, Compressed Air, and Natural Gas.
- Experience in the maintenance department of an industrial manufacturing effort is highly desirable.
